TL;DR: GEO is about making content easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini to understand and cite. Use a clear structure, credible sources and precise answers to customers’ questions. GEO complements traditional SEO: SEO creates visibility in search results, while GEO focuses on visibility in AI answers.

The way we search for information is changing. Many people now use AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini to get answers, rather than only searching on Google. That means traditional SEO is no longer enough on its own. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about making your content easy for AI to find and use in its answers.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) involves optimising content for AI-powered search engines and assistants. While traditional SEO focuses on ranking highly in Google, Bing and other search engines, GEO focuses on making your content easy to understand and use in answers from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Bing Copilot and similar tools.

In short: SEO helps you get found in search results – GEO helps you get cited in AI-generated answers.

Why is GEO important in 2026?

Search behaviour is changing significantly. More users now ask AI assistants questions directly instead of clicking through a results page. This means that an increasing share of traffic never reaches the websites themselves.

Experts estimate that organic traffic from traditional searches will decline by up to 25 % by 2026. If content is not optimised for AI platforms, it simply risks being overlooked.

GEO helps you:

  • Ensure that AI can interpret and use your content in its answers
  • Increase the likelihood of your business being mentioned in AI output
  • Maintain visibility even as the user journey changes

SEO vs GEO – differences and similarities

SEO: traditional search engine optimisation
SEO involves optimising content, structure and technical factors so that a website ranks highly in search engines. Typical activities include keyword research, link building, technical optimisation and content production. The goal is clicks and traffic to the website.

GEO: optimisation for AI platforms
GEO has a different focus: creating content that AI can easily cite in its answers. This requires a clear structure, context and credibility. AI assesses which sources are most relevant to use, so it often selects content that is precise, well-documented and easy to reproduce.

Complementary strategies
SEO and GEO are not mutually exclusive – quite the opposite. SEO continues to ensure visibility in traditional searches, while GEO opens the door to being selected as a source in the next generation of search. A strong digital strategy combines both approaches.

Mini case study: Backlinko tested ChatGPT and Google

The experiment
Backlinko invented a fictional SEO term, “NexorbalOptimization”, and published it on a page that only Googlebot was allowed to index. Bing, Claude and other search platforms had no access to the page. Shortly afterwards, ChatGPT was able to reproduce the term directly – showing that the model used data retrieved directly via Google.

The result

  • ChatGPT (with browsing) could find and cite the term.
  • Other AI models without Google access responded with “does not exist”.
  • Conclusion: Content in Google’s index quickly becomes available to AI models.

The insight for GEO
This test confirms that SEO and GEO are connected:

  • Without a strong SEO foundation → no content for AI to retrieve.
  • GEO initiatives increase the likelihood of your specific content being selected as an answer.
  • Visibility on Google remains the cornerstone, but is now also a direct gateway to AI assistants’ answers.

Quote from Backlinko
“If ChatGPT is indeed pulling results directly from Google’s index, then ranking on Google is no longer just about clicks – it’s about visibility in AI answers too.”

How to optimise content for GEO

Structure and readability

AI needs clear signals to understand content. Use clear headings, bullet points and schema markup. The more logical the structure, the easier it is for AI to contextualise and reproduce your content correctly.

Authority and credibility (E-E-A-T)

AI relies on principles such as Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. Content with sources, statistics and expert knowledge has a much greater chance of being selected.

Prompt-oriented content

Think in terms of questions and answers. When users write prompts for AI, the model often selects short, precise definitions or bullet points. Make sure your content can serve as a direct answer to the questions your customers ask.

Technical factors

Speed, mobile-friendliness and correctly implemented schema markup make a difference. At the same time, heavy JavaScript can create barriers for AI bots. A technically healthy site makes it easier for AI to analyse and use the content.

How do you measure success with GEO?

While SEO is traditionally measured by traffic, clicks and rankings, GEO is more about visibility. The question is: how often is your content cited by AI assistants?

Metrics can include:

  • The number of times content is used in AI-generated answers
  • How often the brand is mentioned in output
  • The relationship between prompts and the answers in which the content is used

The future of search: will GEO replace SEO?

GEO is not a replacement for SEO, but a complement to it. Traditional searches still exist, but the growth of AI-based search platforms means that both need to be incorporated into your strategy. Towards 2030, SEO and GEO will likely become two sides of the same coin: SEO drives traffic, while GEO drives visibility in AI answers.
